Functions and Properties (Pharmacological Actions):

  • As a parsiticide, balms of Peru are believed to destroy the itch acarus and its eggs.

  • As an expectorant ,it is reported that its administration produces a

  • reduction in mucous secretions .

  • As a heart stimulant ,

  • it has been reported to locally increase the blood flow to even 45% at about 3 hours post administration . 

  • Peru balsam was used in the management of a wound following the removal of squamous cell carcinoma in a white rhinoceros. 

  • Antimicrobial properties have been described for the balsam, and application such as use against mosquito larvae and pathogenic bacteria have been investigated.

Medicinal Uses:

  • Stomach disorders like flatulence and distension of the stomach.

  • 2- Respiratory disorders like whooping cough, asthma and bronchitis.

  • About 3-6 centigrams of this gum, mixed with 2 tsp of honey, a ¼ tsp of white onion juice & 1 tsp of betel leaf juice, taken thrice daily is recommended.

  • 3- Hysteria, Inhalation of this gum prevents hysterical attacks. An emulsion made by 2 grams of the gum with 120 ml of water is a valuable medicine in treating hysteria. However, oral dosage is not advisable.

  • 4- In the treatment of impotency.

  • 5- It also helps in treating nervous disorders.

  • 6- Women ailments such as sterility, unwanted abortion, pre-mature labor, after childbirth, post-delivery period, unusually painful, difficult and excessive menstruation and leucorrhoea.

  • About 12 centigrams of gum fried in ghee mixed with 120 grams of goat's fresh milk and a tablespoon of honey, should be given thrice daily for a month. It increases the secretion of progesterone hormone.

  • 7- Relieves toothache. After being pestled in lemon juice, it is slightly heated. A cotton piece soaked in the paste is placed in the cavity of the tooth that relieves pain quickly.

  • 8- Studies have shown that asafoetida oil has anti-biotic properties and inhibits growth of microbes.

  • 9- Several subcontinental dishes like curries, sauces and pickles in conjunction with garlic and onion, are also prepared with asafoetida as an important ingredient. In Iran, the natives rub asafoetida on warmed plates prior to placing meat on them.

  • This herb is also an antidote of opium.
