Sphilis

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum.

Sign and Symptoms

  • The signs and symptoms of syphilis are related to the stage of the infection.

  • The first stage involves the appearance of a painless sore on the genitals, rectum, or mouth.

  • After the sore heals, the second stage will usually manifest with a rash.

  • Finally, after a long period with no symptoms, the third stage can suddenly develop, causing extensive damage to the brain, nerves, eyes, or heart.
